I've lived on the north shore of Oahu now over 35 years and the Hawaiian green sea turtles always laid their eggs on the french frigitte shoals that lay some 800 miles above us. A beautifufl set of atolls that are home to only turtles and birds.
However with the sea level rise the turtles are loosing their beaches to lay their eggs.
Quite sad really. Since this was a such a tranquil private place to lay their eggs. Unharmed by humans or other prey. Now on the north shore of Oahu while I am out surfing, its not uncommon to see the smallest cutest little sea turtle swimming past you. In the past years you would see the turtles almost in their first year, by the time they swam down the current to the Hawaiian islands. I now see nests carefully blocked off by volunteers on the beaches on the north shore. I have never seen any small turtles come out yet. Hopefully one day I will be able to witness this amazing event. Also there are so many turtles now whle surfing on the north shore of Oahu that you nearly run them over on your surfboard. Luckily they know how to duck good while your flying toward them on your surfboard. The north shore is such a special place to surf. Since your so likely to see one of these beautiful sea turtles swimming right next to you. So next time your surfing on the north shore be surf to look for them. Even better take a surf lesson on Oahu or a turtle tour and you will most definitely be able to see one!
